A practical breeder checklist
Verify health testing
Request the actual results for both parents, confirm the dogs' identities, and check the issuing registry or laboratory. Ask why those tests suit the planned pairing.
Meet the dogs and environment
Meet the puppy with its mother where it was raised when practical. If distance prevents a visit, request a live video rather than relying only on edited photos.
Understand early care
Ask how puppies are socialized, handled, introduced to household life, and monitored. Get clear veterinary, vaccination, microchip, feeding, and grooming records.
Read the contract
Review health terms, deposit and refund rules, spay/neuter or breeding clauses, pickup arrangements, and the breeder's lifetime return policy before sending money.
Check the fit
Discuss expected adult size, coat uncertainty, temperament, your daily routine, and what happens if the proposed puppy is not a good match.
Slow down for red flags
Pause if you face urgency, unverifiable results, many always-available litters, inconsistent identities, refusal to show the environment, or payment methods with little recourse.
